Epidural Steroid Injections May Increase Risk for Vertebral Body Fractures

Pain Medicine News – Epidural Steroid Injections May Increase Risk for Vertebral Body Fractures

This study deals with elderly patients and clearly demonstrates that one should talk to elderly patients about the risks of steroid injection, including fragility fracture.

There is no specification about what age constitutes “elderly”, but it undoubtedly includes the vast majority of people suffering chronic pain and getting these injections.

Lumbar epidural steroid injections (LESIs) may increase the risk for vertebral body fractures, according to a retrospective cohort study.

“I believe the important part of the study is the suggestion that there may be a risk to bones as a result of epidural steroid administration that was not previously appreciated,”

“For the first time we are able to see quantitative risk associated with steroid injections with respect to vertebral fractures in the elderly. Such fractures have a measurable impact on quality of life and may even increase the risk for death.”
