This is a brief, but technical article about how oxytocin might be useful for chronic pain. While it doesn’t do anything for nociception, it seems to alter the sensation of pain by reducing the part that makes it “hurt like…” not just “feel like…”.

The role of oxytocin (OT) in pain perception has been extensively studied, mainly in animal models; however, a limited number of studies have examined the analgesic effects of OT in humans.

A review recently published in Neuroscience explores the evidence and findings that have uncovered OT sites of action along pain processing pathways.

From a purely pharmacologic and physiologic perspective, we really have not had a relatively safe, potent alternative to opioids since the 1890s.

In those early days, doctors at Brompton Hospital in London described the use of opioids, morphine, and heroin, as well as a stimulant known as cocaine, which when combined (aka the Brompton cocktail) was prescribed to lessen the pain associated with a terminal illness.   Continue reading

‘Trust hormone’ oxytocin helps old muscle work like new, study finds

oxytocin — a hormone associated with maternal nurturing, social attachments, childbirth and sex — is indispensable for healthy muscle maintenance and repair, and that in mice it declines with age.

The new study, published today (June 10) in the journal Nature Communications, presents oxytocin as the latest treatment target for age-related muscle wasting, or sarcopenia.

Unfortunately, most of the molecules discovered so far to boost tissue regeneration are also associated with cancer, limiting their potential as treatments for humans

Our quest is to find a molecule that not only rejuvenates old muscle and other tissue, but that can do so sustainably long-term without increasing the risk of cancer.

Findings May Reduce Need for Opioid Analgesics

The study reported that 7 of 9 patients reported a 30% to 40% decrease in pain after taking doses of oxytocin and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). These patients also reported improvement in the intensity of pain flare-ups and longer time between flares. In addition, the level of opioid painkillers needed declined by 30% to 40%.

there are basically 4 key findings:

  1. Patients reported an improvement in 1 or more of these pain indicators: less baseline pain, fewer flares, less flare intensity, longer time between flares.
  2. Patients reported an improvement in 1 or more of these psychophysiologic measures: energy, mood, sleep, libido, intellectual functions, sociability.
  3. We observed a decrease in opioid use of 20% to 60%.
  4. We observed a desire to continue treatment.

Administering 2 so-called pregnancy hormones simultaneously in patients suffering from intractable pain may significantly reduce their opioid use, pain, and flare intensity, according to a preliminary study

According to lead study author Forest Tennant, MD, DrPH, an internist and addictionologist at the Veract Intractable Pain Clinic in West Covina, CA, both oxytocin and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormones have been linked to reduced pain and need for pain medicine among pregnant women when released naturally during and after childbirth.

“I would see pain patients whose pain would simply go away if they became pregnant, and even heroin and methadone addicts would not need the drugs when they became pregnant, so it has been clear something was going on with this physiologically,”
